Meet Shannan

Shannan Carter - Owner & Tour Guide
Best of France Travels

My love of travel and languages began as a child, growing up in different countries with my Air Force family. A life-changing year as a Rotary exchange student in the French-speaking region of Belgium sparked my passion for France—and a holiday to Provence confirmed it: one day, I would live in the south of France.

Years of leading immersive travel experiences around the world, often including France, only deepened my joy in sharing this beautiful country with others. Now living in the south of France, I delight in guiding travelers through hidden villages, scenic countryside, and iconic destinations, helping them experience the France I now call home.

I am honored to have received the baton from my friend Carol Etheridge and continue her legacy of providing exceptional travel experiences across France. I am grateful to all our loyal guests—past, present, and future—for their continued support. Best of France Travels thrives thanks to the wonderful travelers and tour partners who make every journey unforgettable.

Experience Matters

My connection with France has always been closely linked with language, education and travel. I studied French and Chinese Mandarin at The University of Newcastle, Australia, and later received a French Government study scholarship to Paris and Toulon during my teaching career. During my university and teaching years, I was fortunate to return to France and Belgium on a number of occasions, further deepening my understanding of the French language and culture. As a high school French teacher, I was passionate about bringing language learning to life. I looked for opportunities to give my students the chance to experience French language and culture beyond the classroom, including leading a group of students to the French territory of New Caledonia, where they could live the language and experience French culture firsthand. For more than 25 years, I have planned, organised and led immersive travel experiences for schools, colleges and adult groups. My role has involved not only accompanying groups, but also having direct input into the planning, organisation and operation of tours. Over the years, I have learned what makes a truly memorable travel experience: a thoughtful pace, time to relax and explore independently, comfortable travel days, excellent accommodation, authentic experiences and opportunities to connect with people and places.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

– Mark Twain

Living in France

As an educator, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to immerse myself further in the French language and culture through a professional scholarship program provided by the French Government.

Designed for French-language teachers, the program focused on pedagogy, French arts and culture. We studied in Paris and Toulon and participated in a variety of cultural activities with local families and fellow educators.

Those experiences allowed me to see France not simply as a visitor, but through a deeper understanding of its language, culture and way of life.

Today, my home is in Carcassonne, in southern France, where I have lived since 2021—and I absolutely love it!

Living in France has allowed me to continue discovering this remarkable country, from the regions I know well to places that are new to me. It also means I can share my firsthand knowledge, experience and enthusiasm with my guests.

Why I love what I do:

The people I meet and the friendships formed on our tours are at the heart of why I love being a France tour guide. One of my favorite moments each day is breakfast together, full of anticipation for the adventures ahead. I especially enjoy hearing about my travelers’ discoveries at the end of the day—the “Show and Tell” of what they bought, the culinary delights they tasted, and the people they met.

Many guests return to travel with Best of France Travels, and sometimes they return together, exploring new regions and continuing friendships formed on previous tours. No matter how many times I revisit a place, each journey feels unique because it’s the people who make it truly special.

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

– Marcel Proust

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

Allow me to share this passion and experience with you!

I invite you to travel with me and discover France and its wonderfully diverse regions. Explore a region in depth. Soak up the French way of life. Take time to enjoy the experiences that make travel memorable.

Perhaps you will return home with a little of France having found its way into your everyday life. Your quick morning coffee may become a leisurely café au lait. You may find yourself cooking more with fresh ingredients, becoming a little more particular about your wine and chocolate, or simply taking more time to savour the moments that matter.

Whether it is breakfast on a sunny terrace, discovering a hidden village, meeting local people or enjoying an unforgettable meal, these are the experiences that allow you to do more than simply see France.

Our Story

Best of France Travels first welcomed guests to France in 2000.

Founded by former French teacher and passionate Francophile Carol Etheridge, the company grew from Carol’s love of discovering France—from tiny villages and off-the- beaten-path corners of the countryside to iconic destinations.

What began with Carol sharing stories of her travels and discoveries eventually became Best of France Travels. For more than two decades, she shared her passion for France with hundreds of travelers and created the foundation for the company we know today.

I am honoured to continue that legacy as the owner of Best of France Travels, building onthe company’s history while bringing my own experience, ideas and passion for France to the journeys I create.
